Weightlifting Platform Eaten Up by Termites

Barely five days before start of the National Games in India, an imported laminated board meant for weightlifting platform for competition and training was found badly eaten up by termites, a source in the Jharkhand Weightlifting Association (JWA) said today.

The JWA got the 16 sq metre portable board about two years back but it was dumped in an open space in JRD TataSports Complex as there was no proper space to store it, the source said.

Confirming the damage, JWA secretary T D Roy said, "We still have time to conduct the event properly if necessary action is taken to replace the damaged equipments."

Mexican Chile Seized in Rat-Infested Warehouse

LAS CRUCES - Imported Mexican chile was seized by U.S. marshals on Monday after inspectors allegedly found it being stored in a warehouse infested with rodents and bugs, according to the U.S. Attorney's office in New Mexico.

An inspection in November by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration uncovered "an active and widespread insect and rodent infestation in the food warehouse," according to documents filed in federal court.

Inspectors allegedly found rodent nests and evidence that mice had gnawed, defecated and urinated on the chile products after they had been shipped to the Duran & Sons Chile Products warehouse, about eight miles north of Hatch.

Warehouse owner Carl Duran had already marked the chile for destruction and was cooperating with the FDA at the time of the raid, which he told the Associated Press was "a shock."

Apart from the chile, however, Duran's warehouse was also allegedly home to "a live cat, live birds, apparent bird nesting, bird droppings, rodent nesting, rodent excreta pellets, animal feces, animal urine, lice and dead insects and insect larvae and moth-like insects," according to court documents.

The New Mexico Environment Department barred the warehouse's contents from being taken to market following the disastrous inspection, according to the complaint, which seeks to destroy the products seized.

The complaint does not state the total amount of products seized.

Warehouse Must Deal with Insect and Rodent Infestation

A New Hope, MN food warehouse was infested with rodents, insects and birds in July, according to a warning letter issued this month by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA ordered the company, New Wha Ming Trading of MN, Inc. to correct violations within 15 days or explain why it needs more time.

During five visits in July, inspectors noticed live and dead rodents, including several in traps; droppings in 17 locations on food and elsewhere; nesting material and gnawed containers.

Bags of food were stained with urine. There were bird droppings on cans of condensed milk. Insects were found on bags and on a dead rodent.

Owner Weizhen Lin said Wednesday he had not received the FDA letter but the company is "working on the issues."

Why Don't All the Bugs Die in the Winter?

09 Feb 2011

"If people are hoping that the bed bug infestation will be killed off by cold winter conditions, they are in for a bad surprise," says Leonard Douglen, the Executive Director of the New Jersey Pest Management Association.

"Bed bugs live indoors with their human hosts," says Douglen, "and the same warmth that keeps our homes and apartments comfortable in winter provides the same condition for them. Moreover, a bed bug, after taking a single blood meal, can live for up to a year without another one."

"Termites, too," says Douglen, "enjoy the same conditions when they set up a colony in a home or other structure. This explains why in the springtime they emerge in the thousands to fly off and create new colonies. Most homes in New Jersey have been hosts to termite colonies for three years or more before they discover an infestation.

Outdoor colonies simply head below the frost line where their large numbers and stored food keep them comfortable until spring arrives."

Honey bees use the same strategy says Douglen. "They cluster together as the temperatures get colder and use their collective body heat to stay warm and protect their brood."

"Ants also burrow deep below the frost line in the same way. If a home or other structure has a colony of Carpenter ants, the same conditions exist as for the termites and, of course, they have a constant source of food. Cockroaches, like ants, are provided with plenty of warmth and food by their human hosts."

"Insects," says Douglen, "have had millions of years to develop ways to over-winter. Some like the Monarch butterflies flies thousands of miles to Mexico to wait for warmer weather to arrive in the northern climes."

Douglen explained that insects that are susceptible to freezing avoid it by generating their own antifreeze components. "The same ingredient in automobile antifreeze, ethylene glycol, is the most common chemical found in insects that use this mechanism to survive."

"This survival mechanism is called diapause," says Douglen. Since insects are essentially little bags of water; the smaller the amount of water they contain, the greater their ability to cool without freezing. Those that generate their own antifreeze will be around in the spring."

The smaller the bug, like ants, insect eggs, or tiny spider mites, can survive easier than larger ones. Larger bugs like grasshoppers can fall victim to colder weather. Yellow jacket queens and other wasp species will over-winter in the eaves under roofs of homes so they can emerge in the spring to create an entire new colony.

"Different insect species have different survival strategies," says Douglen. "The praying mantis survives as eggs while Wooley bear caterpillars will curl up in leaf litter for the winter. When spring arrives, the caterpillars spin their cocoons. Whether as eggs or via hibernation, insect species have been surviving harsh winter conditions for millions of years."

Douglen recommends that homeowners in particular have regular inspections of their property to ensure "that the various areas in and around a home do not become places where a variety of insects, some of whom can inflict thousands of dollars of damage, can be identified and protected against infestations." Homes, Douglen adds, are also invaded by rodent species such as mice who seek warm places to overwinter.

911 Pest Emergency

29 Jan 2011

I have been told I am a bit off center and/or goofy. In fact I accuse myself of this from time to time. It’s just my easy going nature. What happened to me is certainly entertaining and funny, definitely blog worthy! I was at a residential customer’s house and had completed the service. The customer wanted to pay by credit card and for security reasons it must be called in Vs written down. I had left my phone in the truck so the customer told me to use her home phone.

911 Pest Emergency
Not Actual Photo, Used For Parody Purposes

Our main office number is 781-769-9111 so I began dialing 781-769….. and the customer asked me a question which I replied to. I did not realize the phone number entry erased since I did not continue with the number. After a 1 minute pause for responding to the question I continued dialing the remainder of our number 911 and hit send. I was distracted so I did not realize I left off the last 1 before I hit send so I hung up. I redialed correctly and called in the payment. I was walking to the truck and the police office asked if everything was OK to which I said yes. The homeowner came out and the police wanted to know if she was OK.

When asked what this was about the police said someone from this home dialed 911 then hung up! They checked out the house & saw everyone was fine. We all had a good laugh about the situation. Needless to say I will not make this mistake again….at least I don’t think so.

We at EHS always pride ourselves on state of the art training that is why we are widely considered an industry leader in this area. Here you see EHS Service Supervisor Mike “Spike” McGoldrick (the one with the gray hair & glasses) taking an online training program on safety. It is almost like he is trying to get inside the computer!

I just could not resist using this picture for our blog and poking fun of Spike! It does show you our fun & team friendly atmosphere plus ongoing training protocols. I can’t wait to take a picture of Spike when he is trying to figure out how to use his new smartphone!

Chipmunk Guard

Humane Eastern Chipmunk Removal & Control

I never approve of people who try to “do it themselves” when it comes to controlling pests. Too often the pest problem gets worse with other serious consequences. However in this case I applaud the customer for their ingenuity with solving a pest problem. I went to pick up some product at a vendor of ours when I realized the front door to the office lobby was blocked by cardboard. Upon closer examination I noticed some orange tape with the words “chipmunk guard” written on the cardboard. I stepped over the obstacle as it was not a human guard and compliment the receptionist on her invention. She laughed & said that the office gets hot and they like to have some fresh air so they open the lobby door. Unfortunately every time they open the door the chipmunks come running into the office & wreak havoc on the staff. She said that you would hear a scream or someone drop something and you knew that “Alvin” was in the building. So that is the story of how the unofficial “chipmunk guard” got started and to this day seems to be working.

Eliminating Termites the Green Way

Eliminating Termites the Green Way
Location = Burlington, MA

When you hear green you naturally assume it is lighter, friendlier, more sensitive, etc. The bigger questions consumers have are 1) Because it is green it does not work as good or as strong. 2) Is this just another company, product, or service green-washing?

There is plenty of green-washing in today’s marketplace and because of the green movement this has spurned plenty of sales gimmicky tactics to capitalize on this movement. EHS proudly offers the Sentricon termite colony elimination system. In 2000 it was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry award, one of the nation’s highest honors for environmental product recognition.  This was several years before the whole green movement took place. In fact this reduced risk product was created in the early 90’s, when green was just a color. It is a system that is environmentally sensitive PLUS offers proven scientific colony elimination. In fact it is the ONLY termite control product that can scientifically prove that it offers termite colony elimination! You can’t ask for a better termite protection option. For EHS to support something that eliminates termites while being safe for your children, pets, & the environment just makes perfect sense! As a termite specialist I love installing this system because I know I am delivering the best termite protection for your biggest investment. The EHS office staff have even nicknamed me “Timmy Termite.”
