Dust Mites & Pest Control

Dust mites are not a pest control issue despite what some people think. It is understandable since it is an insect. I figured since we get so many questions on this that I would at least put a blog up about it.

There are some things that can be done to make life better for them or even fix the issue without needing a professional service company. It can be costly depending on what is needed but if there is an allergy issue then it is a worthwhile investment that is permanent. The best thing about the changes you make is that you are enhancing the overall air quality of you home.

Dust mites are smaller than a grain of sand so you will not see them. Dust mites flourish in warm, humid environments. If you are experiencing allergy like conditions (sneezing, coughing, watery-itchy eyes, etc.) then the result may be dust mites. The age of materials plays a big role in the level of dust mites in a home. Rugs, mattresses, box springs, pillows, etc. Basically anything fabric related. It is a fact that the weight your pillow increases 10% each year from dust mites. Your mattress has doubled in weight after 10yrs due to dust mites. If items are not discarded & buying new is not an option you have several alternatives.

  • The less carpet the better. No carpet is awesome. Go with tile, laminate, wood, etc. flooring Vs carpet.
  • Leather furniture Vs fabric will produce less dust mites.
  • Hire a good cleaning company to steam clean all throw rugs & furniture. If you stay with carpet then it should be professionally cleaned quarterly to bi-annually.
  • After cleaning you can encase the mattress/box spring/pillows using www.protectabed.com it is the only firm I trust.
  • Invest in good dehumidifiers to cover all living areas of the house.
  • If after all this then you can invest in a dust control or industrial hygienist service company to address the issue.
