The literally walk the streets among us. I figured I would take a picture of the big Oriental Cockroach I came across during an inspection the other day. This roach species is common in sewer lines just like American Roaches. They are often called the “water bug” to many as they are often associated with water issues. People down south call them Palmetto Bugs. You literally see these roaches walking on sidewalks in many urban cities because of the high populations in sewer and water lines. When summer temperatures are high enough they come out and walk the streets on humid nights. The problem with this roach other than its size and disgusting look is the fact that it migrates in very large numbers. If there is a drastic change in their environment (water, heat, etc.) they can infest a building like you see in horror movies!!! Since they are scavengers they can live on some many interior + exterior items and are so resourceful in their ways to survive.
If you see 1-2 of these roaches then it is best to act at that point because you definitely want to avoid the possibility of hundreds migrating inside your home or business.
