We got the call from a man who said it was urgent that we respond to a situation involving a raccoon at his elderly mother’s home in Norwood, MA. This incident happened in the middle of the night the day prior & I was there the following day. It turns out this poor woman was asleep in her bed when she was awakened to being mauled by a 60LB raccoon!!! Screaming & injured the woman threw her bed quilt over the animal, slammed her bedroom door & ran out side and called 911. The police & fire departments responded and were forced to kill the animal.

The woman unfortunately tested positive for rabies. Why did the raccoon attack? How did it get in? It is possible that the raccoon was delusional from being sick or something involving her litter or natural animal instinct triggered it into attack or defense mode. Bottom line is you can never gauge the behavior of a wild animal. My inspection found no obvious signs of entry around the outside. The chimney was not the entry point as there was no evidence of activity plus the flue was closed. My inspection took me to the roof where I was amazed at what I saw. A roof top vent fan was completely destroyed by the raccoon. It totally mangled the unit…ripped the cover off, bent the metal screening, bent the aluminum fans, tore the shingles, pulled the bolts out, etc. You can see the damage in the pictures and the obvious visual sign of entry which was the raccoon fur stuck on what was left of the fan. It is easy to see what these pests are capable of. It is so hard to believe that a raccoon could possess such amazing strength to do this kind of damage!
