If you’ve spotted a mouse, cockroach, or other highly unwelcome visitor in your home, we certainly feel for you. But here’s a reality check: It could have been much, much worse. From nocturnal flying mammals to slithery limbless reptiles, these extreme pest infestations will make you want to have your home inspected again and again. And again. Just to make sure.

Snakes in the water

This house had so many snakes, you could taste them in the water. “I had touched and dealt with enough snakes by then that the tap water tasted just like the snakes taste,” Ben Sessions told The Associated Press in a video dated June 2011. That’s two years after his family moved into this snake-infested home in Rexburg, ID.

The Sessions family reportedly would lie awake in bed, listening to the snakes slithering in the walls, according to CBS News. But there was no cause for a lawsuit—they had signed off on a disclosure from the previous owners stating that the house had snakes. Perhaps they didn’t grasp quite what “had snakes” meant. Unable to take their unwanted roommates any longer, they walked away from the home and it went into foreclosure.
