Cabin rental companies are taking unconventional steps to tackle a growing problem. Pest control companies are using canines to sniff out bed bugs in cabins, homes and vehicles.

With peak tourism months approaching for vacation cabins, this business keeps busy. They work with the cabin companies to inspect for bed bugs. If they do, these cabin companies can then call a professional exterminator to resolve the issue.

It is a measure of their foresight to spend money to make sure there are no bed bugs in cabins when guests are checking in.

The main concern is that they are feeding on your blood and they are doing this typically when you are sleeping.

But there are canines that are trained to smell bed bugs.

The dogs sniff around the rooms with a high intensity until they come on to the scent of the bugs. Then their mood changes quickly.

Bed bug-sniffing dogs are trained with a passive alert, which they stop and they sit and they will point with their nose when they are on the odor.

After a dog finds the bugs, they reward the canine with a ball. It's part of their training methods.

When it comes to treating a bed bug problem, use a professional.  It is hard to eliminate bed bugs on your own.
