I did service for this really nice customer. This sweet family was finding good-sized carpenter ants on the second floor only of ten-fifteen year old home. I said to myself, “there has to be a big colony nearby.” So when I got out of the truck, I headed for the small woodlot abutting the house. Coincidentally enough, the first tree I looked at was a likely candidate. There was fairly extensive rot, and sure enough, plenty of carpenter ant activity. So I gave the giant rotted stump a few health kicks with my steel tipped boot. Big mistake!!!! I’m a hundred feet from the service vehicle and I don’t have any treatment equipment on me as I was on an inspection only. What the heck do I do??? I have about a thousand carpenter ants, larvae and queen, all spread over a 4x5 foot area. So now I have to run like crazy back to the truck to get the equipment and an equally mad dash back. By now the homeowner comes out and has a look. “I was watching you from my window” she states. “I am very impressed with diagnostic skills however your sprinting and ant-herding skills need improvement.” Needless to say we both had a good laugh over that one. Just another day in the field!
