Fend Off Pests Through Routine Spring Cleaning - MA, RI

Spring cleaning is an American pastime. But it is not simply about eliminating dirt, dust, and clutter. It’s also about establishing a barrier between you and the hordes of pests that seek to infiltrate your home once the weather turns warm. Here’s some tips to help you win the battle against bugs.

Eliminate Nesting Spots: A cluttered basement is a favorite nesting ground for many bugs such as rodents. De-cluttering and organizing your belongings with the use of shelves and cabinets can eliminate pest hiding spots. Meanwhile, remove possible vegetation around your property by tidying up your yard.

Eradicate Food Source: Food containers that are left uncovered could easily attract bugs like ants. Make sure to organize your pantry and use containers with tight lids.

Remove Free Water: If your bugs happen to leave you some “Benjamins” (AKA hundred dollar bills) at open water sources around your home, then maybe consider leaving them out. If your bugs tend to not pay you for water, then get rid of standing water on your property. Leaking pipes are a common water source for pests. Also, spaces where moisture accumulates (low spots in your crawl space for example) should be addressed as well. Flip over containers that can hold water for mosquitoes and other pests to use.

Seal Entry Points: Thoroughly check your homes for any openings that could possibly serve as portal of entry for pesky pests. Use caulk to seal up these entries. Check door and window screens for holes or gaps.

Get Back to (Cockroach) Basics

Controlling German cockroach infestations requires a comprehensive approach, both in the field and out. Here’s how to get the job done:

1. Find the hot spots.

An overlooked roach population will prevent you from gaining control and may spread to neighboring businesses or apartment units. To find the source, conduct thorough inspections. That means lifting drain lids, pulling items and appliances away from walls, arming yourself with a screwdriver and a good flashlight, and having a good look around. To see what may be lurking in mixers, espresso machines, cash registers and other equipment, apply a flushing agent and take apart and clean motor housings if necessary, added the 40-year industry veteran.

2. Monitor more.

Effective management is based on a lot of diagnostics. Count how many monitors you’re using and double that number as “the information you gather from that effort is just incredibly valuable”.

Continuous monitoring tells you where introductions are coming in so you can jump on them before a population gets established. Research shows in most cases that “genetic relatedness is extremely high between cockroaches in a single building.” That reinforces the importance of monitoring as one introduction could be the cause for a building-wide infestation.

3. Teach prevention.

Clients aren’t pest experts and don’t understand how their actions may be exacerbating the problem. Educating them on this falls to the PMP and may include how to conduct proper housekeeping and sanitation, that it’s okay to report cockroach problems or throw out infested food items, and how ignoring the problem can have health consequences or cause economic problems for others.

4. Communicate better.

To educate stakeholders and get insights on pest activity (tenants and employees are your best source of intel), open communication is essential. But there are “a lot of communication problems going on,” many stemming from cultural differences and language barriers.

Like the United States, Canada is a diverse country and we’re going to have to get better at (communicating) because there’s different languages coming in all the time.

To bridge this gap, shows pictures to restaurant staff.  Hangs a photo of a roach with strips of green painting tape attached and asks employees to place tape where they see the pests. Not only is this “easy to communicate” but “it cuts my time in half to find the roaches” during next service visit.

An easy-to-read report is created that helps mall property managers act more quickly to address cockroach problems at food court restaurants. The system rates pest activity and sanitation and “gives a complete snapshot on two or three pages” compared to wading through a 48-page report.

5. Make sanitation stick.

Getting clients and tenants to engage in proper cleaning, sanitation and maintenance is the biggest hurdle to controlling cockroaches. “It is more of a challenge than the roaches are. If we can get them to clean and maintain and repair, a lot of times we’re going to get really good control with very little chemical,”.

Floor-level sanitation, especially in food service accounts, has worsened as companies have moved from in-house to low-bid contract cleaning services. But “the pest management industry has to take some ownership of allowing this to continue. We really have to do a better job becoming quasi-sanitarians again, holding our customers accountable for those conditions” and getting them to act on the recommendations cited in service reports. Clients and tenants need to understand that when they become part of the solution, they get better control and save money.

6. Move beyond baits.

Baits are a wonderful tool, but they’re only one of the tools in the box. Meanwhile, dusts are so underused it’s insane. Dusts in wall voids and cracks and crevices, such as where pipes enter the walls. Dusts even can be used in combination with baits, giving pest management professionals double the control opportunity.

We urged PMPs to use a vacuum in clean out situations. The difference you can make just physically removing those German cockroaches is amazing and it will push the results of your pest management program forward very significantly. However, doing so requires time so schedule and price jobs accordingly.

Other control options include pest proofing and heat treatments.

7. Stay vigilant.

Persistence wins. PMPs need to “be Sherlock Holmes” as the more investigative you are the more likely you are to find a good hiding spot where the roaches are and that’s the best place to bait.

Don’t be afraid to change your service approach. Doing an overnight service allows you to use different chemicals and approaches that you couldn’t use during the day.

Takes a team approach, involving stakeholders like property managers, restaurant owners and staff, and even the local health inspector if necessary, to meet control goals.

8. Improve training.

Invest in effective training so technicians thoroughly understand integrated pest management for German cockroaches, how to communicate with clients to eliminate conducive conditions, and how to properly apply products and conduct other treatments.

They must understand why German cockroaches do what they do. If you do not have that knowledge or you cannot pass that knowledge along to the guys who are responsible for the execution of the management program, you’re going to fail” because the “devil is in the details” when it comes to understanding why an infestation isn’t getting better.

If you want to control a cockroach you have to think like a cockroach and that requires understanding the biology and behavior of the pest. Eighty per cent of the work is other than putting out bait.

Reproduction: Females produce 40 or more eggs per ootheca (egg case) and reproduce throughout the year. They favor a humid environment with an average temperature of 80+ degrees Fahrenheit.

Behavior: German roaches are active at night, leaving their harborage to find food and water. Otherwise, they remain hidden in dark, secluded areas, including in wall voids and around motor housings in appliances. At most, only one-third of a population will forage at night.

Detroit Police: Man Throws Shoe with Gun in it at Cockroach, Bullet Strikes Him in Foot

DETROIT - A man trying to kill a cockroach ended up with a bullet wound in his foot Tuesday morning at a home in the 18700 block of Albion Street in Detroit.

Police said the 50-year-old man, who uses a wheelchair, threw his shoe at the cockroach in an effort to kill the bug. However, his revolver was inside the shoe. The gun fell out of the shoe, discharged and a bullet struck him in his foot.

His condition is not known at this time.

NPMA Warns Drivers of Winter Vehicle Threats Posed by Vermin

FAIRFAX, Va. — From worn-out brake pads to transmission issues, there are countless causes for car troubles. Would it surprise you to know that mice could be one of them? In the midst of winter, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is warning motorists that rodents are also a source of strife under the hood, especially in colder weather, posing a threat to both drivers and their vehicles.

“Cars and trucks offer ideal places for refuge for rodents to spend the winter. Once inside, they are insulated from the cold and potential predators, and can easily gain access through vents, steering columns and pedal shafts,” said Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. “Some automobile brands also now feature plant-based biodegradable materials like soy-wiring, which is particularly appetizing to rodents looking for food.”

Recognizing the signs of an infestation and practicing proper prevention techniques is critical to help keep rodents from hiding under the hood. Common indicators of rodent activity in cars include gnawed upholstery and insulation, chewed wires near the engine and droppings. Vehicles parked in rural areas or near alleys and sewers, as well as those left unused for extended periods of time, are at higher risk for an invasion. To keep rodents out of cars, NPMA and its consumer educational site,, offer this advice:

Keep the Vehicle Clean: Paper, tissues and fast food bags can quickly pile up and serve as nesting material for mice.

Promptly Address Moisture Build Up: Water is a necessity for rodents to survive, so a leak in the heater or wet materials left in the vehicle will draw them in.

Eliminate Entry Points: An open sunroof or cracked window is all a mouse needs to easily gain entry to a car. Make sure they remain closed when the car is unattended.

Pay Attention to the Garage: Despite parking in a garage, vehicles can still be at risk for rodents. Take extra measures to ensure the garage is rodent-free by keeping trash cans covered, eliminating excess debris, clearing clutter and caulking/sealing any gaps or openings where rodents can squeeze through.

Check Under the Hood: Rodents tend to build their nests near the engine due to the warmth it generates. Routinely take a look under the hood to ensure invaders haven’t made their way in, as rodents situated here have easy access to crucial circuitry.

How Rats Became an Inescapable Part of City Living

Rats are our shadow selves. We live on the surface of the city; they generally live below. We mostly work by day; they mostly work by night. But nearly everywhere that people live, rats live too.

In Seattle, where I grew up, the rats excel at climbing sewer pipes—from the inside. Somewhere in my hometown right now, a long, wet Norway rat is poking its twitchy pink nose above the water surface in a toilet bowl. Seattle also has another species, roof rats, which nest in trees and skitter along telephone lines. In the Middle Ages, they may have transmitted plague.

From Seattle to Buenos Aires, urban rat populations are rising—as much as 15 to 20 percent in the past decade, according to one expert. Charismatic animals like elephants, polar bears, and lions are all in decline, yet inside our cities, we find it hard even with extraordinary efforts to keep rat populations in check.

Of all the animals that thrive in our world—pigeons, mice, sparrows, spiders—we feel strongest about rats. Rats have a reputation for being filthy and sneaky. They’re seen as signs of urban decay and carriers of pestilence.

Do the little beasts really deserve it? Some of the things we hate most about rats—their dirtiness, their fecundity, their undeniable grit and knack for survival—are qualities that could describe us as well. Their filth is really our own: In most places rats are thriving on our trash and our carelessly tossed leftovers.

“It is us, the humans,” New York rodentologist Bobby Corrigan says. “We don’t keep our nest clean.”

Corrigan is a leading expert on urban rats. He has studied the animals since 1981 and works as a consultant for cities and companies around the world with rat problems. He’s the one who told me about the alarmingly high rate of rat “toilet emergence” in Seattle.

I meet him on his turf on a warm April day at a park in lower Manhattan, one of the rat capitals of the world. Corrigan appears in a hard hat and neon orange vest, holding a clipboard. These accoutrements of authority will allow us to tromp through flower beds and subway tunnels without being challenged. Small statured and intent, Corrigan was raised in a big Irish Catholic family on Long Island. He talks like New Yorkers in the movies.

New Yorkers like to titillate one another with stories about sightings of rats as big as dogs. But the biggest rat Corrigan has ever heard of was a one-pound, 13-ounce creature that hailed from Iraq. He has a standing offer: $500 for anyone who can produce a two-pound rat. He doubts that he will ever have to pay up.

The dominant rat in New York City is the Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus, also known as the brown rat. Brown rats are burrowing animals that are widest at the skull, so they can slip into any space wider than that (including the pipe leading to a toilet bowl). Corrigan points out a small hole directly behind the bench I am sitting on—it’s the main entrance to a rat burrow. He explains that most rat burrows have three entrances, a main entrance and two bolt-holes for quick escapes.

Brown rats live in families. They have two to 14 pups at a time, keep their nests (which they often build in the garden beds of public parks) relatively clean, and patrol small territories. When the pups reach puberty, as early as 10 weeks of age, they move out and look for mates.


Take one year in a typical urban rat colony—how fast might it grow? Researchers estimate that a litter of nine pups 10 weeks into the year would grow to 270 pups by the 30th week and wrap up with a whopping 11,907 rats by year’s end (population growth measured in word width, below). Rats usually reach sexual maturity by 12 weeks, and litters can vary from two to 14 pups. Reproductive rates are highly dependent on environment. The more shelter, food, and trash, the higher the rat count.

Corrigan and I head out on our rat safari. In a flower bed beside a courthouse he paces carefully, feeling the soil beneath his boots. Sensing a hollow space, he jumps up and down heavily a few times. Moments later a rat pops out of a nearby hole and makes a run for it—a dusty brown streak of small-mammal panic. I feel a little bad. Most New Yorkers, however, want all the rats in their city dead.

Just a week before I hunted rats with Corrigan, Mayor Bill de Blasio had announced “an aggressive new extermination plan” against rats in the city’s public housing, part of a $32 million effort to reduce rats by up to 70 percent in the most infested neighborhoods.

Many cities try to control rats with poison. But unfortunately for the rats and for Corrigan’s surprisingly tender heart, fast-acting poisons don’t work well; rats that feel ill after a bite or two stop eating the bait. So the extermination industry uses anticoagulants, or blood thinners, which don’t affect rats for hours and don’t kill them for several days. The rats die slowly from internal bleeding. Corrigan hates to inflict such a death, but he fears outbreaks of disease. So he continues to lend his expertise to clients.

We proceed to Tribeca Park, where according to Corrigan the rats have learned to hunt and kill pigeons. “They leap on their backs like a leopard in the Serengeti,” he says. But tonight the park is quiet. City workers might have recently injected burrows with dry ice, or frozen carbon dioxide, Corrigan says—a more humane approach to killing rats. As carbon dioxide gas wafts off the ice and seeps through the burrows, rats fall asleep, then never wake up.

Few who kill rats for a living hope for more than local or temporary success. After rats are poisoned in an area, Corrigan says, the survivors simply breed until the burrows are full again, and the new generations still find huge mounds of trash bags set out on the sidewalks of New York every night. Until cities radically change how they deal with their trash, Corrigan says, “the rats are winning this war.”

In New York, when you see smoke-colored streaks on the sidewalk, chances are you’re crossing a rat thoroughfare. The oil in their belly fur stains the concrete.

A Night Hunting Rats in the Nation’s Capital

Brown rats likely originated on the Asian steppes, where they first learned they could eat well by hanging out with humans. They spread with trade along the Silk Road, and were established in parts of Europe by about 1500. (The misnomer “Norway rat” may have arisen when an infested ship that happened to be Norwegian docked in an English port.) They colonized today’s United States before it had that name, by the 1750s, and apparently from both the east and the west. Brown rats along the East Coast are descended mostly from European ancestors, but West Coast rats are a mix of European and Asian genetics.

Roof rats—Rattus rattus, also known as black rats—are a global species as well. They may have originated on the Indian subcontinent and adapted to human settlements millennia ago, when humans invented agriculture. They reached Europe by A.D. 300, in time for the decline of the Roman Empire.

Black and brown rats alike traveled with explorers and traders, then settled down to eat our trash and steal our food. Today in Africa the median farm still loses 15 percent of its yield to rats. In Asia rats and other rodents eat enough rice each year to feed 200 million people.

Pacific rats, a third species of Rattus, are a different story: Polynesian explorers sailing from Tahiti and other islands intentionally brought them along in their canoes—as food. They cooked them in their own fat to make rat confit; they made beautiful cloaks of the fur.

As the Polynesians colonized various Pacific islands, tiny rodent explorers settled with them. In fact the rats’ genetic family tree has been used to shed light on when and in what order various islands were discovered. Between 1200 and 1300, Polynesians and their companions reached New Zealand—which until then had no mammals at all other than bats.

Rat Haven

On some small, remote islands, rats have done as much damage as human invaders. On Easter Island they’re suspected of having wiped out palm trees by eating all the nuts. On other islands they threaten seabirds by eating eggs and chicks.

The ecological consequences can be far-reaching and surprising. One study found that by massively reducing bird numbers on some islands in the Indian Ocean’s Chagos Archipelago, rats also interrupted the flow of bird poop into the ocean, where it fertilizes ocean plants. As a result, plant-eating damselfish were smaller and grew more slowly around the islands with rats than the islands without.

Fighting back, conservationists have been trying to eradicate rats with ambitious poisoning campaigns, targeting larger and larger islands. At 1,500 square miles, South Georgia, near Antarctica, is the current record holder: In May 2018 it was declared rat free after helicopters dumped 330 tons of poison in five years on its stark landscape, at a cost of $13 million. With the rats gone, conservationists expect to see an explosion in the number of albatrosses, skuas, terns, petrels, and South Georgia pipits and pintail ducks.

The island nation of New Zealand is thinking even bigger. It plans to kill all the rats in the country—with traps and poison baits spread over some 100,000 square miles—to try to save its rare native birds, including the iconic flightless kiwi.

In Wellington, the capital city, I visit one of the first rat-free oases, a 556-acre sanctuary called Zealandia. Surrounded by a seven-foot metal fence with a mesh too tight even for a rat to wriggle through, the sanctuary is home to such odd birds as the hefty, flightless takahe and the manic hihi. In the global urban landscape, Zealandia is a triumphant anomaly—“a reversal of the idea of the city as a biodiversity wasteland,” says Danielle Shanahan, the sanctuary’s conservation manager.

As the populations of native birds have increased inside the sanctuary, they have spilled over the fence. In response, bird-loving New Zealanders have formed citizens’ groups to trap rats and other predators in parks around Zealandia. The aim is to create a “halo” of habitat that the birds can expand into. Wellington families now spend weekend afternoons acting as rodent death squads, setting and clearing rat traps. For the first time in generations, birds such as the North Island saddleback, or tīeke, can be heard singing their sweet songs in the city center.

Some New Zealanders, however, have doubts about the Predator Free 2050 campaign, which also plans to eradicate stoats and Australian possums. Biologist Wayne Linklater of Victoria University of Wellington calls the plan “unachievable” and says the poisons being used are too cruel. The whole thing is a distraction, he says: Many native species are more threatened by overgrazing and habitat loss than by predation.

Criticism comes also from members of the Ngātiwai, a tribe of Maori on the North Island. Their Polynesian ancestors brought the kiore, as they call the Pacific rat, to New Zealand, and they consider themselves guardians of the rats—which they still eat occasionally. Ngātiwai Trust Board CEO Kris MacDonald describes the kiore as “half the size of a New York sewer rat, all nice and fluffy and tasty looking.”

Off the northeast coast of the North Island, the tribe manages Zealandia’s mirror image: a steep but beautiful rocky islet called Mauitaha, which may be the world’s only rat sanctuary. It’s not exactly teeming—on an overnight visit there, hoping to eat a rat, I failed even to spot one—but someday it may be the only place in the country where kiores persist at all.

Hori Parata, a Ngātiwai environmental resource manager and my guide on Mauitaha, tells me a story about bringing a kiore in a cage to a social gathering. An old man approached and started talking to the rat, tears wetting his face. He had thought they were all gone.

One summer night in Washington, D.C., photographer Charlie Hamilton James and I go rat hunting with a company called Unique Pest Management, which uses trained Patterdale terriers to dispatch rats that are bothering people.

In the Adams Morgan neighborhood, rich in restaurants, we watch the dogs work as a team to kill 31 rats in a single alley—a small fraction of the population, no doubt, but the company claims that with a few visits it can scare survivors into moving away. As the terriers go about their business, the human employees use hockey sticks to stop rats from fleeing the killing zone. Neighbors cheer from their windows.

Despite their bad rap, rats have redeeming qualities. They’re smart—and maybe empathic too. In one study, rats freed other rats from cages, even though it gained them nothing and even when they could have gorged on chocolate instead. The researcher behind the study, neurobiologist Peggy Mason of the University of Chicago, says that typically, once the helper rat frees his companion, “he follows the liberated rat. He jumps on him and he licks him”—apparently to console the distressed animal.

Still, most of us really hate rats. Is it the nocturnal furtiveness, the way rats act like they have something to hide—unlike squirrels, say, which look you in the eye as they raid your bird feeder?

Rats: Farm to Table

“It is the tail,” says Laurinda Williams, who breeds rats on Long Island and sells them as pets. “If it weren’t for the tail, everyone would have rats.”

Val Curtis, a behavioral scientist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and an authority on disgust, says rats are considered disgusting in nearly every human culture—and it’s probably not just the tail. “We are preprogrammed to learn to avoid things that make us sick,” she says. As humans evolved, the ones who didn’t mind sharing space with rats were more likely to die of rat-borne illnesses—and less likely to have descendants—than the ones who were revolted. Thus most of us today have inherited an innate revulsion, Curtis says, “in the same way we are programmed to find saber-tooth tigers scary.”

In the Long Island rattery, which is a room in her parents’ house, Williams shows me animals with fancy coat colors and patterns. She talks about the complexities of keeping the rats healthy and selecting for easy, calm temperaments. It’s a lot of work. The rat room has a strong, musky smell, both sweet and foul. Her scented candle doesn’t quite overpower it.

Williams walks over to a large cage and picks out a fat gray rat with an ivory belly and a split ear from a youthful brawl. His name is Dexter. “This is my heart rat,” she says. “Your favorite rat is your heart rat. You get very bonded.”

I hold Dexter briefly, and he wanders around on my hands. I’m surprised to feel how much he’s trembling.

Corrigan, the rat expert, doesn’t have a heart rat now, but he has owned pet rats in the past. Decades of trying to outsmart them has made him not only respect but really like them.

“I admire this animal. I love this animal. That’s my life’s paradox,” he says.

He welcomes New York’s use of dry ice instead of blood thinners—though the city isn’t doing it just to reduce rat suffering. Hawks, owls, and other raptors are increasingly living in the city, and New Yorkers don’t want to see them dying from eating poisoned rats. The rats are considered vermin; the raptors are welcomed as heartening signs of nature returning to the city.

Scientists these days are working on what might be the ultimate in rat control: a genetic engineering technique that would spread infertility genes through a wild rat population. If fears of unintended consequences can be overcome, this method might one day enable us to wipe out rats on an unheard-of scale, without poison.

Might we miss them? Without rats, New York and other cities would have fewer hawks and owls. Tons of carelessly discarded food would simply putrefy in place, rather than be carried off by a rodent cleanup crew. On YouTube there’s a wildly popular video that shows a New York rat dragging an entire slice of pizza down the stairs of a subway station. A comment praises the animal as “a true New Yorker.”

Rats help keep us from wallowing in our own filth: If we can’t love them for it, respect and a little acceptance would be a healthy step. Outside a soup kitchen near Chinatown, after sunset, I meet a maintenance worker named Jonathan Hincapie who is having a smoke as he watches rats frolic on a heap of trash bags.

I ask if the rats bother him. “I don’t mind rats,” he says. “This is New York City.”

Courthouse Closes Early Due to Bed Bugs Falling from Lawyer’s Clothing

Courthouse closes early due to bed bugs falling from lawyer’s clothing

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton said a lawyer came up to a third-floor courtroom with bugs falling out of his clothing.

“Hard to imagine someone doesn’t know, you know that some bed bugs are crawling all over them certainly in abundance,” Sheriff Walton said.

Courthouse officials had a meeting and decided to close the courthouse at noon until the bed bugs were gone.

“I was told the individual that had them also shook his jacket over the prosecutors files,” Sheriff Walton said.

Mike Clarke, head of security for the Rogers County Courthouse, said the attorney was non-responsive to the situation.

“I don’t even think he cared,” Clarke said.

Exterminators were called to the 90,000 square foot building and were prepared to work through the night to get rid of the pests.

Employees and others treated themselves as a precaution.

Officials said the courthouse will reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m.

A letter posted on the door of the courthouse advises anyone who believes they may have been exposed to treat themselves .

No word on who will pay the bill for the exterminators or what is being done for cases that had to be rescheduled.

How cool is it to find a Bark Scorpion in an Allston, Massachusetts sub basement? Our Service Manager, Leigh Fryxell knows. She was very careful to capture it with the old cup and paper technique.

Most people won’t agree with our “how cool” assessment, but we love all animals. Although a painful sting may have altered our admiration a bit.

Rats ‘as big as kittens’ walk up the staircases at Hong Kong housing estate where first human case of rat Hepatitis E virus was found

Visit to Choi Wan Estate in eastern Kowloon found big green dustbins parked under stairwells near wet market, with tissue, plastic and food waste smeared on floor

Choi Wan Estate in eastern Kowloon has been suffering from a rat infestation problem, with residents spotting rodents scurrying around staircases and in refuse collection centres on the ground floor. The estate, built in 1978, has come under the spotlight after a 56-year-old man living there became the first human worldwide to contract the rat Hepatitis E virus.

Tse Kai-chuen, a retiree who has lived on the estate for almost 40 years, said he saw rats – some seven to eight inches long – on the staircase outside his second-floor flat two months ago, during the height of summer.

“The rats walk up the staircases,” the 70-year-old said, looking unperturbed.

He said he had placed a board across his front door to prevent the creatures from crawling into his home.

Assistant nurse Ngai Wai-ling, who is in her 60s, said she had seen rats “as big as kittens” outside the central collection area for trash at the foot of her block.

“But there is no need to be worried. All places where rubbish accumulates are bound to have rat problems,” Ngai said.

Once thought to only affect animals such as rats, the Hepatitus E virus is “highly divergent” from the strain that affects people. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong who studied the man’s case said they could not definitively say how the man contracted the virus, but ventured that food he ate had been contaminated by rat faeces.

“Rodent droppings were found around refuse collection bins on the ground floor and the floor where the patient lived,” the researchers said in a report.

The estate has 21 blocks of rental flats divided into two sections. There is also a wet market and shopping centre with a range of food outlets located on the ground floor.

In most cases, two blocks share a central refuse chute that deposits rubbish into a storage chamber on the ground floor. Access to the chute is through a room, usually locked, on each floor.

But a visit by the Post on Friday found big green dustbins parked under stairwells near the estate’s wet market, with tissue, plastic and food waste smeared on the floor.

At the shopping centre, bins were lined up at an open-air collection point. A grocery store worker said she had seen rat droppings in her shop recently and a dead rodent about two years ago.

Along the corridors of the blocks, some residents had dumped bags of trash outside their door, awaiting cleaners who would collect them at 9pm and 7am every day and bring them to the room with the chute. On some floors, there were bound-up plastic bags outside the room.

On Friday, workers were spotted checking existing metal boards or adding new ones to pipes and casings for cables to block rodents from using them as passageways around buildings. At the foot of several blocks, there were containers with rat poison and warning signs.

The area’s district councilor Dan Shum Wan-wa said like in many public housing estates, Choi Wan suffered from rodent infestation. On average, in the summer, he said he received between four and six complaints, including from residents living on higher floors.

“The estate is generally clean but one problem is the open-air refuse collection area near the market and shopping centre.”

Chan Lee-shing, a community officer who works for the district councilor, urged the Housing Department to look into a new refuse collection system that compressed rubbish by machines.

“Then [there will be] no smell and leaking problems and the truck can just collect the compressed waste right away,” Chan said.

“At least rats and other insects would find it hard to get food.”

The government has for the last 18 years compiled a rodent infestation index for the city’s 18 districts, assessing how much bait set in an area is eaten.

Wong Tai Sin, the district that Choi Wan Estate is in, had a rate of 1 per cent last year but authorities have admitted the index would not reveal the actual conditions within the district. The city had a particularly nasty episode of rodent infestation earlier this year, with control officers reporting double-digit demand for their services.

A spokesman for the Housing Department said offices at Choi Wan Estate had not received any complaints from residents in the past few months about rats in their flats.

He said it had contacted the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department after learning about the study from University of Hong Kong and conducted a joint cleaning operation in the estate on Friday.

The FEHD and the Home Affairs Department plan a roadshow about cleaning operations on Wednesday and remind the public to maintain good hygiene at home and in the estate.

Front line staff of the Housing Department also attended a one-day pest control course in August.

Representatives from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, as well as residents, staged a protest at the Housing Department’s office at Choi Wan Estate to request a thorough clean-up within the residential area.
