TERMITES: DAMN THE TORPEDO’S…… (Johnston, RI)
The bar has just gotten higher with the EHS pest stories! The call came in from an elderly person who had swarming termites in his living room. Seeing as it is winter in New England and termite swarming at this time of year would be a freak of nature I had to take the call. After talking with the man he was of sound mind and quite knowledgeable. He said he would be standing near the bay window in his living room and could hear and see them swarming plus bouncing off the wall and window. He said he researched what swarming termites looked like on the internet, stating they are small black “torpedo shaped” insects with wings and they fly toward windows and light. It sure seemed like he was describing what may be swarming termites plus he said there are plenty of specimens in his bay window.
Off I was to Johnston Rhode Island to see what may be a freak of nature. Upon getting to the home I went right to the bay window to inspect the specimens. They were in fact small black torpedoes only problem is that they did not have wings and were quite pointy and plastic. Confused as to what it was all of a sudden a few torpedo’s hit the window. I look up at the elderly man who is in the process of combing his hair with a black pocket comb. I ask to see his comb and point out that it is missing a bunch of the teeth and those are his swarming termites. He said that his eyesight is not so good but he likes to look out the window and spy on his neighbors and always combs his hair while doing it. We both got a good laugh over this!
